Kumble was born in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, on 17 October 1970. His interest in cricket sparked at an early age. After excelling in school-level matches, he went on to play for Karnataka at a junior level before making it into the state team.

  • He first came into prominence when he took 13 wickets in a match in the year 1990 against Kerala.
  • His Test debut was against England in 1990 and ODI debut was during India’s tour to Sharjah that same year.
  • Kumble became a part of national fame after taking four wickets in successive balls against West Indies during Hero Cup Final in Kolkata (1993).
  • In February 1999, Kumble dismissed all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium situated in Delhi. This outstanding performance placed him alongside Jim Laker of England to achieve this feat.
  • During his tenure between 2007 and 2008, he served as the Captain of the Indian Test team where he led India to its maiden test series win in South Africa.

  • In acknowledgment of his achievements and contribution to Indian cricket, Anil Kumble was awarded with Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy by ICC for Cricketer of the Year in 1996.
  • He was also honored with Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 2005.
  • In December 2010, Kumble was elected as President of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
  • In June 2016, he became head coach for Indian Cricket team until his resignation a year later.
