Arun Lal, born in Moradabad on August 1st, 1955, is to-date known as one of the most prolific cricketers that India has ever produced. His performances have etched his name into the annals of Cricket history and he primarily shines as an opening batsman.
Early Years and Domestic Career
In his early years, Arun Lal developed a passion for cricket despite not having any family pedigree associated with the sport. His determination to succeed saw him take up rigorous training from an early age which later paid off in the form of national recognition.
- Domestic Debut: He made his first-class debut for Delhi against Punjab during the 1974-75 season at Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
- Ranji Trophy Success: It was his consistent performance with Bengal in Ranji Trophy matches that brought him under the limelight. He played more than 150 domestic matches scoring over 7,700 runs including sixteen centuries at an average of around 43.16.
Career at International Level
Lal’s success soon opened opportunities for him to display his prowess on the international platform representing Indian cricket team.
- International Debut: On December 1982, he debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against England at Jaipur and just weeks later made his Test debut also against England at Kolkata.
- Spectacular Innings: Some of his famous innings are against Sri Lanka where he hit two fifties and a century aggregating 257 runs thus winning the Man of the Match award in Kanpur.
In his entire international career, he played 16 Test matches and scored one century along with 6 half centuries. In ODIs, out of a total of 13 fixtures, he managed to score two fifties.

Arun Lal’s career was unfortunately cut short due to injuries around the late 1980s. He vanished from national cricket only to re-appear as an insightful commentator articulate about understanding various facets of cricket.
