Ashok Mankad

Ashok Vinoo Mankad, born on 12th October,1946 was a former Indian cricketer who played as a right-handed batsman and occasional off spinner in both the Test and One-Day format. Son of another legendary cricketer, Vinoo Mankad, he is remembered for his contribution to cricket both nationally and internationally.

Early Life & Career Breakthrough

Mankad started playing competitive cricket at the club level in Mumbai. He made his first-class debut for Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Ranji Trophy during the 1963-64 season. His impressive performances quickly elevated him into national reckoning.

International career

The international career of Ashok Mankad began when he debuted against Australia at Adelaide on December 23,1969. Although it took quite some time for him to form an impactful performance at this level despite early promise. Eventualy, he established himself as a reliable middle order batsman between 1971 to 1978 under various captains, including Ajit Wadekar and Bishan Singh Bedi.

  • Test Career: In his test career from 1969 -78 Mankad had scored around 991 runs with an average of 25.41 in the 22 matches, where he got opportunities to play.
  • ODI Career:In one-day format,ahed made his debut in England’s tour of India in the year
    of 1974,he managed to score just around 44 runs with an average run-rate of 14.66.
    he played only four matches throughout his ODI career which lasted till 1978.

Coaching Career & Contributions to Cricket Post Retirement

Post his playing career, Mankad transitioned into coaching. He coached the Mumbai team in domestic cricket and guided them to multiple title victory in Ranji Trophy.
He was very passionate about training young cricketers at the grassroots level.

Ashok Mankad passed away on August 1,2008 due to cardiac arrest leaving behind a rich legacy both as a player and coach.He remains an important figure in Indian cricket history for his significant contributions towards shaping many successful careers.
