A senior member from one of India’s most celebrated cricketing families, Ashok was not just an eminent cricketer during his prime but also continued to contribute immensely in shaping the future generation of cricketers post his retirement.

Born on 12 October 1946 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Ashok vinoo Mankad hailed from a lineage where cricket ran thick in their veins. His father, Vinoo Mankad was regarded as ‘India’s Post Independence All-Rounder’ and it’s no surprise that young Ashok found himself drawn towards the sport too.

  • Inspired by his father, he made his entry into first-class cricket in 1963 playing for Bombay (now Mumbai).
  • To everyone’s astonishment, this talented young player scored the then highest individual score(265) representing University against Bengal in Rohinton Baria Trophy match which still remains as unbroken record.
  • This profound display of prowess quickly helped him pave his way into international cricket at quite young age.

Embarking on an international career that spanned between 1969 to 1978, Ashok had many notable achievements under his belt.

  • In total, he played 22 Test matches for Team India scoring over a thousand runs and averaging close to 26.
  • While being noted for his exceptional skill as a right-handed batsman, it was his effective off-spin bowling that lent an additional edge to India’s performance on pitch.
  • His best knock came against Australia at Bombay during the 1969-70 series, where he hammered a dazzling double century (213 runs).

Career Post International Retirement

Even after retiring from the international scene, Mankad continued to leave his mark in Indian domestic cricket. He served as a coach later helping promising young cricketers polish their skills and bring laurels for the nation.

  • He is noted to have shaped stalwarts like Dilip Vengsarkar and introduced fitness regimes even long before they became popular in Indian dressing room.
  • Possessing an astute understanding of the game, Mankad always stressed upon match temperament being more important than just batting and bowling technique.
