Born Muhammad Babar Azam into a cricket-enthused family – three of Babar’s cousins represented Pakistan’s Cricket Team. His uncles encouraged him to pursue cricket professionally because they saw an extraordinary talent in him from a young age.

Rise to Prominence

Azam made his way to the top with consistent performance in domestic cricket. He made his debut for the Pakistan National Team against Zimbabwe in May 2015 during a T20I match. He scored his first ODI century in his sixth match while playing against Zimbabwe at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This talented batsman continued scoring consistently which earned him recognition and trust amongst teammates and selectors alike.

  • In 2016, he became the second fastest to score five One Day International (ODI) centuries after Quinton de Kock and second fastest to achieve ten ODI hundreds worldwide.
  • In 2017, he was named among the Cricketers of the Year by Wisden and also awarded PCB’s ODI Player of the year title.
  • By 2020, he quickly moved up the ICC rankings to be ranked number one in T20Is and is currently within top five batsmen in ODIs worldwide along with prestigious Indian counterparts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
