Bharatheterajendran Arun, popularly known as Bharat Arun, is considered one of the most influential cricket sportsmen to have ever come from India. Born on December 14th, 1962 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (now in Telangana), Bharat made major strides in world cricket both as a player and as a coach.

Career As A Player

Arun’s playing career began when he got selected for Tamil Nadu at an early age due to his commendable exploits with the ball. An all-rounder by nature, Bharat was right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He became illustrious while playing for South Zone where he demonstrated prodigious performances that propelled him into national recognition.

  • In total, Arun played two Test matches and four One Day Internationals (ODI) for India between 1986 and 1987.
  • Arun claimed one wicket each in those two tests while taking only one ODI wicket against Australia.
  • Even though his international cricket career was short-lived, Bharat had a remarkable domestic cricket career. Over almost a decade of play in first-class cricket games, Arun scored over 1600 runs and took more than 100 wickets.

Post-retirement, Arun shifted his focus towards coaching – fostering young talents across the country which cemented his legacy even further in Indian cricket.

  • In July 2014, he served as bowling consultant with defensive skills for Indian National Cricket Team before officially taking the role of team’s bowling coach in 2017.
  • Under his tutelage, Indian fast bowlers have flourished. He played a pivotal role behind scenes creating India’s top-tier pace attack that dominated across all conditions — at home and away.
  • Arun has also sampled success on international grounds such as guiding the Under-19s to deliver an impressive performance during the World Cup held in Sri Lanka in 2000 and being named as an assistant coach for Kings XI Punjab – one of the franchises competing in the popular Indian Premier League (IPL).

  • In 43 first-class games, he scored more than thousand runs with his highest score being 149 against Karnataka in a Ranji match registered in year 1988-89 while playing for Hyderabad.
  • As a bowling coach under him from August 2017 onwards till now, India have managed to possess one of strongest fast-bowling attacks worldwide especially in test cricket format, made evident in India’s first ever Test series win down under conducted during Australian tour.
