Cottari Subbanna Nayudu was born on 31st January 1895, in Nagpur, British India. He began playing professional cricket at a young age and represented Hindus in the Bombay Quadrangular in 1916. His first-class debut came against MCC during their tour to India in November 1926. During his career that lasted from 1916 until the mid-1960s, he led several teams with distinction including Holkar, Maharashtra, and Central Province.

  • Nayudu’s tryst with international cricket started when he was chosen to play for India against England at Lord’s on June 25th, 1932. As India’s first test captain, Nayudu became an inspiration for future generations.
  • In domestic cricket, with over six decades of active participation, he had scored more than eleven thousand runs and took 411 wickets in First Class Crickets games.
  • Among his most famous innings were a knock of 153 against Arthur Gilligan’s team in Bombay in November 1926 which got noticed by everyone.
  • An important milestone was achieved in his life when he became the recipient of the prestigious award – Wisden Cricketer of the Year Award – back in 1933.
  • After retirement, C. S. Nayudu served cricket by becoming a selector and manager of the Indian cricket team for many years.

C.S. Nayudu’s contribution to Indian cricket is immense. His dedication, indomitable willpower and his passion for the sport set him apart from others of his time. This left-handed batsman was also rated highly as an off-spin bowler who exhibited exceptional skill with a versatile bowling style encompassing googly and leg-breaks.

Highlighting the importance of fitness in cricket, he remained physically active almost all through his life until a severe injury in a road accident ended his career at the age of 68. He died in Indore on 14th November 1967 but his legacy continues to inspire young cricketers today.
