Born on July 21, 1934, Chandrakant Gulabrao “Chandu” Borde is an iconic figure in the world of cricket. Known for his exceptional batting and bowling skills, he represented India internationally and left an indelible legacy.
Early Life & Career
Borde was born in Pune, Maharashtra, and showed an inclination towards cricket from a young age. He played first-class cricket for Baroda and Maharashtra. His impressive performances led to him being selected for the national team at just 20 years old.
International Cricket Career
- Debut against Pakistan: He made his international debut against Pakistan in December 1955.
- Rise to fame: The year 1961 marked great success for Borde as he was the highest run-getter during India’s tour of England.
- All-rounder performance: Apart from being a charismatic batsman, he also provided useful leg breaks with his right-arm bowling.
- Captaincy: For two Test matches during the New Zealand series in 1968, Borde served as captain, stepping up to cover Pataudi’s injury.
