Dattaram Hindlekar stands as an iconic figure in the world of cricket. He was born on 1st May 1915, in Bombay(now Mumbai), British India. Having played for both Bombay and Hindus during his early career, he eventually represented his nation globally to secure a distinct place among other legends of this sport. His primary role was that of an opening batsman, but he also gained recognition as one of India’s most skillful wicket-keepers.
Early Life and Career
Hindlekar grew up amidst the intense interest for cricket usually prevalent in Maharashtra state among Indian youth. His talent began showing at an early age, and it wasn’t long before his skills caught everyone’s attention.
In 1934, he made his debut playing for Bombay team, where he successfully registered four dismissals against Western India Province. The assurance and readiness with which he performed came across as extremely efficient even under high-pressure circumstances on field warranting him a prominent place in the team.
International Representation:
Hindlekar received his first opportunity to represent India internationally at Lord’s during the year 1936 vs England. Despite facing defeat in this match, Dattaram significantly contributed to leading the overall innings score count wearing pads presented by skipper Maharaja Nayudu himself.
