Born on April 6th, 1956, Dilip started developing his interest in cricket from a very young age. He made his first-class debut for Bombay (now Mumbai) during the 1975-76 season alongside some stalwart names like Sunil Gavaskar and Eknath Solkar. His performances earned him recognition and he was quickly marked as one to watch out for future.

  • The Wisden Cricketer of the Year – 1987: Vengsarkar was named as The Wisden Cricketer of the Year, a prestigious award bestowed by the cricket almanack Wisden upon five cricketers each year for their exceptional performance in previous English season. In that particular year, he reached peak of his career and also topped ICC rankings.

Even though Dilip retired from professional cricket, his contributions did not stop there. He utilized his knowledge and experience towards development of young talents by setting up ‘Elf-Vengsarkar Academy’ in Mumbai around late 90’s. Thousands of boys from all over India came here to groom their skills under his guidance; some notable players include Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma among others.

In addition to running academy, he took on crucial roles such as chairman of national selection committee (2006-08) and vice-president of Mumbai Cricket Association (2010-15), where he continued to make significant contribution to Indian Cricket.
