Gautam Gambhir : A renowned Cricket Star
Born on the 14th of October, 1981 in New Delhi, Gautam Gambhir spent his early years training hard and developing his natural talent as an exceptional left-handed opening batsman. His parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to play cricket from a very young age. For many years after embarking upon his professional career, he was highly regarded as one of the strongest pillars in Indian cricket.
Career Beginnings
- Inspired by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s century against England in Manchester in 1971, Gambhir started playing cricket at just ten years old.
- This began when Gautam joined the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy under coach Sanjay Bhardwaj who coached several future cricketers.
In addition to learning the technical aspects of cricket, he also gained mental resilience through participation in various conditions and circumstances throughout India. These experiences were beneficial for smoothing his transition into professional cricket later on.
Achievements and Accolades
The pinnacle of Gambhir’s international career came during two separate global tournaments where he scored crucial fifties – World T20 2007 final against Pakistan, and again during the final of 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup versus Sri Lanka. He was an essential part of leading Team India to be crowned champions both times.
- In total he played 58 Test matches scoring over 4100 runs with an average of around 42 per inning.
- Gambhir participated in over 150 ODIs(scoring close to 5300) and almost 40 T20 internationals (scoring nearly 1000) for the Indian Cricket Team.
Gambhir’s domestic cricket career was no less exceptional. Drawing on his prolific experience, he captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League(IPL) making them champions twice under his leadership -in 2012 and again in 2014.
Retirement and Philanthropic pursuits
Gautam Gambhir announced retirement from all forms of cricket on December 4, 2018. He then switched gears to give back to society in more ways than one.
- Charitable work: He established the Gautam Gambhir Foundation which works with children and veterans. The foundation also provides meals for the needy, scholarships for disadvantaged students among many other initiatives.
- Politics: Under the slogan “Let’s change Delhi”, he campaigned vigorously during elections after joining BJP (Bharatiya Janta Party), focusing mainly on his constituency East Delhi.
