He then moved to train at Osmania University, where his evident natural ability secured him a spot in the varsity’s cricket team.

In November 1949, Ghulam made his test debut against Pakistan (then unified) that propelled him instantly into international status.Noted for his steady operations from one end while giving minimal opportunities to scores, he managed to secure impressive figures both home and abroad. During this period, he played alongside legends such as Vinoo Mankad and Subhash Gupte, forming what is still considered among the best spinning trio Indian has ever produced.<\p/>

  • Captaincy: Ghulam assumed national team captaincy after Vijay Hazare’s tenure ended. Despite struggling initially, he successfully led India to their first series win against Pakistan in 1952.
  • Retirement: Ghulam retired from international cricket after playing the third Test against Australia at Bombay 1958-59. He ended his career with an impressive tally of 68 wickets from 22 Tests at an average of 30.17

His expertise saw him become a coveted selector for the Indian team post-retirement, even becoming chairman of selectors. Ghulam also served Indian cricket as its Secretary from 1975-1980 during which period he played a pivotal role in organizing the tours for foreign teams.
