Biography of Hanumant Singh
Hanumant Singh, was born on 29th March 1939, in Banswara District, Rajasthan, India. He belonged to the royal family and was the son of Maharawal Lakshman Singhji. Despite being a member of royal lineage, he developed an unmatched passion for cricket at a very young age.
Early Life and Education
He attended Rajkumar College in Raipur where his love for cricket bloomed under the guidance of his sports mentor, Coach Fisher.
Career Highlights
- In November 1964, he bypassed the usual pathway into Test Cricket and received immediate success by scoring a century on his debut against England at Delhi.
- Hanumant brought pride to Indian cricket with an astonishing score of 105 runs, sending shockwaves through the world of cricket even though India lost that memorable match.
- One year later after making test debuts, he made substantial runs contribution towards the team’s total – giving him prominent recognition as one of India’s top batting order players during that era.
- It is notable that across his career span from 1964 until 1971, Hanumant played precisely fourteen Tests for India in which he recorded two hundreds alongside four scores over fifty – thus placing him high within India’s batting averages for this period.
Late Career & Retirement
Beyond boisterous stadiums and cheering audiences post-retirement, Hanumant moved onto administrative roles related to the sport. He held various positions including tenures as coach and selector for Bombay Cricket Association (BCA) as well as manager/coach for India’s 1979 cricket team that toured England.
Posthumous Recognition and Honours
Singh, despite having retired from active sport many years ago, has left an indelible mark on Indian cricket both as a player and in his administrative roles. His dedication to the sport of cricket was acknowledged posthumously when he was awarded The Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Sport by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Personal Life & Passing
Hanumant Singh passed away on November 29, 2006 due to dengue fever. The news came as a shock to all his fans and fellow cricketers who saw him not just as a great sportsman but also as a warm-hearted human being. Hanumant is survived by his wife Pushpa DeViji with whom he shared two children.
A Legacy Remembered
In remembrance of Hanumant’s immense contribution towards Indian Cricket, there are various trophies named after him; notably the Hanumant Singh Challenge Trophy, Mumbai Schools Sports Association’s Best School Team trophy among others. Today we remember Hanumant Singh not only as one of India’s best right-handed batsmen but also for shaping the future direction of cricket in India.
