Hrishikesh Hemant Kanitkar, better known as Hrishikesh Kanitkar, is a now retired Indian cricketer, who made significant contributions to the sport in India. Born on November 14th, 1974 in Pune, Maharashtra, Kanitkar demonstrated an early passion and talent for cricket which he undoubtedly inherited from his father – Hemant Kanitka, himself a renowned cricketer.

Early Career

Kanitkar’s journey in professional cricket commenced with first-class cricket where he represented Maharashtra. His performance was nothing short of exceptional during this time, as it saw him making enormous strides towards success. However, it was not until January 1997 that he got a chance to make his debut at the international platform under the captain-ship of Sachin Tendulkar against England.

The pinnacle moment of his career came during the Independence Cup finals held at Dhaka in January 1998 when he hit Saqlain Mushtaq for a boundary off the penultimate ball to clinch victory for India against Pakistan. This moment has been engraved into the annals of Indian cricket history due to its significance.

Kanitkar also performed well in domestic cricket while playing for Rajasthan, leading them to two consecutive Ranji Trophy titles in 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. His leadership skills were remarkable resulting in great victories for his team.

End of career & Life After Retirement

Following a brief international stint, Kanitkar ultimately parted ways with the game after the 2014-15 season of Ranji trophy rendering an official retirement announcement later that year.

Currently, he is employed as one of the esteemed coaching staff members at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Kanitka continues impacting and contributing to Indian cricket breeding future talents now from behind the curtain.
