Inclined towards cricket from an early age, Navle honed his skills under the guidance of Baloo Wazkar, V.S. Subhedar and B.V. Nadkarni, which later helped him earn his place in the cricket team of Holkar College, Indore where he studied. There was no looking back for this talented sportsman after that stint. Upon graduation, he joined the “Hindu Gymkhana” – a prominent cricket club in Mumbai – thereby marking the start of his illustrious professional career.

  • The first Test Wicket Keeper: Janardan Navle holds the distinction of being India’s first Test match wicket-keeper. He made this feat during India’s maiden test appearance against England at Lord’s cricket ground in June 1932.
  • Prolific Domestic Player: Apart from international matches, Navle showcased outstanding performance in domestic games too. During his career spanning over two decades (1921–1941), he played for several teams including All Maharashtras, Hindus and Western India with an impressive record.
  • Eloquent Fielder: Known for sharp reflexes behind the stumps, he had an exceptional talent for taking diving catches. Navle largely contributed to his team’s total by making crucial stumpings and catches.

Final Years as Cricketer and Later Life

In the later phase of his cricket career, Navle continued playing with the same spirit but toward his retirement he transitioned into a mentor, coaching budding cricketers. His final First-Class game was against Bombay in 1941. Even after quitting professional cricket, he maintained an active interest in it.

Navle passed away on July 21, 1979, leaving behind a legacy that included not only stellar performances but also strong foundations for future Indian cricketers.
