Jasprit Jasbir Singh Bumrah, born on 6th December 1993, is an Indian international cricketer who plays for the Indian national team and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He has achieved substantial recognition and fame due to his proficiency as a fast bowler.

Early Life and Career

Born in Ahmedabad into a Sikh family, Bumrah lost his father at age seven. His mother Daljit Bumrah raised him single-handedly while working as a school teacher. Jasprit’s cricketing journey began with playing tennis ball cricket in the streets of Gujarati locality alongside elder brother Jyotiraditya.

  • In 2013, he started his career by playing for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). John Wright, the then-scout of MI discovered him during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
  • The young player marked ODIs debut against Australia at Manuka Oval on January 23, 2016, and proved his mettle by taking two wickets in seven overs while giving away just forty runs in the process.
  • Later that year, he made his T20 International debut against Australia where he took three wickets thus showcasing his prowess as an emerging talent.

Rise to Fame

In 2017, he was called for Test match selection but could not participate because of abdominal strain. However, this minor setback did not impact his determination. He made Test debut at Newlands Cricket Ground on January 5, 2018, against South Africa and took four wickets which led India to victory.

His unique bowling style, which includes a short run-up leading to high arm action and the ability to land balls accurately at good length or yorkers has won him accolades. In 2018, he established himself as one of India’s premium bowlers by becoming the highest wicket-taker in bilateral T20Is series history while playing against New Zealand.

  • In August 2019,, Bumrah became the fastest Indian bowler to take 50 Test wickets during the first innings of the second Test against West Indies.
  • He was also vital in India’s successful campaign in the 2019 World Cup where he ended as team’s highest wicket taker with 18 dismissals.

  • Poly Umrigar award for international cricketer of the year in 2017 and 2019.
  • The Dilip Sardesai Award for taking most Test Wickets (48 in 2018 -19).
