Lakshmipathy Balaji, often just referred to as Balaji, is a former professional cricketer from India and an indelible part of the nation’s sporting history. Known for his fast bowling skills, piercing line and length deliveries, and affable personality, Balaji played both domestic and international cricket with distinction.

Early Life & Domestic Career

Born on 27th September 1981 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India, Balaji started playing cricket during his school days. He made his first-class debut for the Tamil Nadu cricket team at the young age of 17. His impressive performance helped him gradually rise through the ranks of domestic cricket.

  • 2001-02 Ranji Trophy: He bagged 33 wickets in seven games thereby becoming a crucial player for Tamil Nadu.
  • Performance in Duleep Trophy tournament: Following his successful stint in domestic leagues, he was called up for the Zone Team in this tournament where he continued showcasing consistent performances.

  • Tamil Nadu Premier League(TNPL): After retiring from international cricket, he continues to play an influential role in TNPL, mentoring younger bowlers which is instrumental in their growth and development.

The International Stint

Informally known as ‘Bala’, Lakshmipathy Balaji debuted internationally against West Indies during a Test match held at Mohali in October 2002. From there onwards, he had spectacular highs along with challenging lows throughout his career.

  • Series against Pakistan in 2004: Balaji’s career reached new heights when he was part of India’s tour to Pakistan. He bagged five wickets which played a key role in securing the match for India.
  • The Injury-Forced Break: In late 2005, an unfortunate stress fracture in his back led him to take a break from cricket. This nearly ended his international career but fortunately, Balaji made a strong comeback after almost three years of rigorous rehabilitation and recovery process.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In addition to his time with the national squad, Lakshmipathy Balaji also had successful stints at various franchises during the Indian Premier League(IPL).

  • Kolkata Knight Riders: After being signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) ahead of IPL 2011, Balaji became instrumental in helping KKR win their first-ever title in 2012.
  • Punjab Kings: Following up on this success, he moved to Punjab Kings and later Chennai Super Kings(CSK), thereby providing significant contributions and imparting invaluable experience onto younger bowlers at both teams.

Career Post Retirement & Coaching Journey

Balaji announced his retirement from First-class Cricket in November 2016. However, even after hanging up his pads, Balaji has continued contributing to the sport through coaching stints.

  • Bowling Coach: His encouraging coaching style coupled with his rich experience helped him land a job as bowling coach of Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings), followed by CSK where he currently serves.
