The Life and Career of Laxman Sivaramakrishnan

Born on December 31st, 1965, in Madras (now Chennai), India; Laxman Sivaramakrishnan is a retired Indian cricketer turned commentator. As a player, Sivaramakrishnan was primarily known for his exceptional spinning talent. Nonetheless, his stint as a professional cricketer was relatively short-lived, lasting from the early to mid-1980s.

Early Cricketing Years

Sivaramakrishnan’s domestic cricketing career started at an early age with Tamil Nadu team in the Ranji Trophy – India’s premier domestic cricket competition. Despite being one of the youngest players in the team, he showed prodigious talent with his spin bowling – showcasing accuracy and variations that belied his tender years. His performances quickly caught thenational selectors’ attention.

International Career

  • The young spinner made his international debut in Test Cricket against West Indies during their tour to India in December 1983. Against fearsome quick bowlers, his guileful leg-spin provided some solace to the beleaguered Indian team and he ended up taking impressive wickets.
  • In his first overseas series against Pakistan the next year, he achieved the remarkable feat of claiming three five-wicket hauls in consecutive innings including a best of seven for eight runs. It still remains among the most extraordinary spells by an overseas leg-spinner on Pakistani soil.
  • Sivaramakrishnan participated in the World Championship of Cricket held Australia in1985 where India triumphed and emerged as winners. He was named Player of the Tournament after turning out to be the highest wicket-taker and providing fatal blows to opposing teams.
  • However, his career suffered a steep decline shortly after as he started struggling with form. He made his last international appearance in 1986 at a very early age of 20. Despite his short-lived career, Sivaramakrishnan left an indelible mark on the sport that lives on till date.

After Cricket Career: Commentary and Administrative Roles

Sivaramakrishnan transitioned into cricket commentary and analysis after retiring from professional cricket. His astute understanding of the game and articulate comments quickly gained him popularity among viewers worldwide. He remains one of the most respected voices in Indian cricket. In addition to this, Sivaramakrishnan served as a national selector for junior India team from 2003-06.

In May 2020, Laxman was appointed as a member of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricket committee replacing former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble. This position is another recognition of his reputation within global cricket circles.
