Madhav Mantri: A celebration of a Cricket Legend
Madhav Mantri, one of India’s most revered cricketing personalities, will always be remembered for his contribution to the sport both on and off the field. Born in Nashik, Maharashtra on September 1, 1921, Mantri was not just an excellent professional cricketer but also a passionate mentor and keen administrator dedicated to preserving and promoting the integrity of cricket.
A Dynamic Cricket Career
The right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper had a career that spanned from 1941 till 1968. He represented Bombay in the Ranji Trophy (India’s domestic first-class competition) as well as donning national colors on four occasions in Test matches for India.
Despite having such limited opportunities at an international level, Madhav Mantri left an indelible mark with his exceptional performance against Pakistan during their Indian tour of 1954-55. In a match held at Nagpur, he scored an impressive 43 runs while partnering Polly Umrigar who hit an illustrious double century.
- In total, Mantri played 93 first-class games scoring a commendable 4137 runs at an average of 39.59 along with three centuries under his belt.
- As a skilled wicketkeeper, he showcased his skills by claiming more than 150 catches and executing around two dozen stumping across his career.
Beyond Playing:’An Ardent Advocate’
No less significant was Madhav’s involvement in cricket administration. Having amassed extensive knowledge about this sport over several decades, he made substantial contributions to its improvement and development.
- Taking over as manager for the Indian team during their England tour in 1990, he is often attributed with having a significant role in shaping the early cricketing career of Sachin Tendulkar, whо had just started his international journey at that time.
- He held various official positions such as being a selector for Mumbai and West Zone sides. Additionally, he was honored to be chosen president of The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and acted as secretary for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
A Lasting Legacy
Madhav Mantri’s multifaceted contribution to Indian cricket cannot be overstated; from playing professionally at national and domestic levels, serving on administrative boards or mentoring young talents like his legendary nephew Sunil Gavaskar.
He died on May 23, 2014 at the age of 92 leaving behind an esteemed legacy. However, his influence continues to resonate throughout the cricket world who remember him fondly as one of most dedicated servants of cricket India has ever seen.
