Madhusudan Rege: A Renowned Cricket Sportsman
Known for his exceptional performance in cricket, Madhusudan Rege carved out a distinctive niche not only in Indian cricket history but also in the hearts of countless fans. An eminent Maharashtra cricketer, Madhusudan born on June 20, 1924, glittered the Indian field with his extraordinary skills.
Early Life and Education
Born to Mr. G.P.Rege and Mrs. Mangala Rege in Poona (known as Pune today), India, Madhusudan had his primary education at St.Vincent’s High School where he initially developed an interest in cricket sport. He was academically excellent and pursued graduation from Fergusson College, Pune subsequent to which he joined Sir J.J College of Architecture in Bombay(currently Mumbai) for post-graduation.
Career Highlights
- In the year 1941-42 during Pentangular Tournament, Madhusudan made his debut against The Rest.
- A very memorable match that brought him under limelight was when he scored a magnificent century within 60 minutes while playing for Maharashtra against Mumbai during Ranji Trophy match help back in December 1944.
- In university matches followed by completion of academics, he shone brilliantly like a rising star & helped the West zone win numerous times consecutively.
- In January 1950, Rege received call palimpsest from Board President’s XI against Commonwealth team led by Sir Learie Constantine.
Captaincy Era
Towards the late part of his career, Rege became the captain of Maharashtra cricket team and successfully led them to various victories. His outstanding leadership qualities on field made him a motive figure for many young cricketers.
His Retirement
Madhusudan retired from professional cricket in 1962 after an illustrious career; however, he remained strongly associated with cricket administration for years post retirement. He served as an executive member of Maharashtra Cricket Association and also as a national selector during late 80’s.
Awards & Recognition
- Besides creating numerous hallmarks of success, Madhusudan was best known for his stinging drive shots through covers.
- He received Laxman award in the year 1980-81 by Uttar Pradesh government for his immense contribution towards sport especially cricket.
Demise
While Madhusudan Rege continued playing local cricket after retiring from international tests and first-class games, sadly, this champion cricketer passed away due to natural causes on November 16, 2013 at the age of 89 years old. Yet, he remains alive in hearts and memories of every enthusiastic sports lover around India even today.
