Born on 13th June 1965, Maninder Singh is known as one of the greatest cricketers hailing from India. Being a left-arm spinner, he initiated his cricket journey at an early age. With extraordinary skills and incredible hard work, Singh has definitely made his name prominent in the cricket realm.

Early Career

In his initial career span, Maninder Singh was associated with Delhi teams where he got recognition due to his unmatched bowling performances that set him apart from other players. His determination for cricket began to lead him toward success when he got selected for under-19 cricket trials which eventually became a stepping-stone for Singh’s successful future endeavors.

National Team Selection

Singh escalated up-to national team selection boards right after his exceptional performance in under-19 series. At just 17 years old, he was selected to play as part of the Indian National Team in their tour against Pakistan in 1982. This was indeed a moment of pride not only for Singh himself but also for all Indians since this was quite unusual for such a young player to represent his country at the international level – especially against rivals like Pakistan.

  • In career’s first Test match in 1982 (held Karachi), Singh managed to get some big names out including Miandad and Zaheer Abbas both of which were known best players of their times.
  • One of the most remarkable achievements by Maninder included Indian win over England in World Cup Semi-Final (back in 1987) which ended his spell with about three wickets costing him only 54 runs.
  • Importantly, Singh’s best career performance was in the Test Series of 1986/87 where he took an impressive sum of total 27 wickets against England!

Fall and Redemption

Singh’s fall came when he struggled with mental health issues, leading to his underperformance in successive matches. Unfortunately, it resulted in eventually being dropped from the team. However, his fighting spirit paved way for redemption when he successfully made a comeback by joining Kolkata Knight Riders as their bowling coach.

Post-retirement, Maninder stayed involved with cricket through commentary stints and cricket analysis on various sports channels. He also contributed to the training and development of young cricketers at grassroot levels across India aiming to produce good quality players equipped with strong basics reminding us all that true legends never retire!
