Manohar Hardikar: A Legend of Indian Cricket

Born on 12th September 1917, Manohar Hardikar was an eminent cricketer of his time who had a significant role in shaping India’s cricket competition.

  • Hardikar made his first-class debut for Maharashtra during the 1941-42 Ranji Trophy season. During one of his initial matches against Bombay, he stood out with scores of 60 and 153 runs respectively.
  • In January 1945, Hardikar played one of the most defining innings of his career where he scored his highest First Class score – a spectacular innings of 202 not out off just over six hours. This match was particularly memorable as it helped West Zone win by an innings thanks to Hardikar’s double century.
  • With an impressive performance at the domestic level, he earned his Test debut for India in their tour to England in June 1946. He played three Tests on that tour but unfortunately did not manage any impactful performances.
  • Post his playing career, he took up the role of coach at Shivaji Park Gymkhana, training upcoming cricketers and discovered or prolonged many successful careers such as Sunil Gavaskar and Ashok Mankad.
  • He also served as national selector from West Zone from mid-1970s till early ’80s.

A right-handed batsman, Hardikar was known for aggressive stroke play and powerful hitting abilities. His marvelous record includes 14 centuries which is quite commendable considering the era in which he played. With graceful elegance on field and observed ‘Gentleman conduct’ off field, he was respected by the opposition and admired by his teammates.

In honor of his services for Indian cricket, Hardikar was felicitated by revered BCCI President Raj Singh Dungarpur before the start of a match in Bombay during 1987. This accolade is considered as one of highest respect points from people who are associated with cricket history in India designing it’s future too.

Later Years and Legacy

After retiring from competitive cricket, Hardikar spent considerable time coaching young cricketers at various levels. He passed away on August 17th, 1996 leaving behind an untamed fiery cricket legacy. His dedication towards cricket embodied not just through his own game but also through numerous successful cricketers that were product of his coaching endeavors.
