Mohammad Kaif is one of the most memorable names in Indian cricket history. Early Life
Born on December 1st, 1980 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, Mohammad Kaif’s interest in cricket was nurtured from a young age by his father Mohammad Tarif, who himself was an accomplished cricketer having played for Railways and Uttar Pradesh. His younger brother Mohammad Saif too followed their father’s path and became a first-class cricketer.
Career Milestones
- Under-19 Success: Kaif shot to fame when he captained the Indian Under-19 team to victory in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2000.
- National Team Debut: Kaif made his international debut for India in March 2000 during a Test match against South Africa.
- Natwest Series Triumph: His resilient knock of 87 not out against England at the Lord’s flung him into national stardom as he guided India to a historic win chasing a mammoth target of 326 runs in the finals of Natwest Trophy series 2002.
- Domestic Dominance: Kaif had success with domestic teams including Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. He even led Uttar Pradesh to its maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2005–06 season.
- IPL Stint: Kaif was also part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he represented Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. His IPL career spanned from 2008 to 2012.
Retirement and Post-retirement Career
In July 2018, Mohammad Kaif announced his retirement from all forms of cricket exactly 16 years after his iconic knock in NatWest Series final. Post retirement, Kaif did not shy away from the game and continued contributing to it by taking up coaching roles in various platforms including IPL team Delhi Capitals where commenced as an assistant coach.
