Mohinder Amarnath: A Renowned Indian Cricketer
Described as one of the most valuable cricketers India has ever produced, Mohinder Amarnath Bhardwaj, better known as Mohinder Amarnath or simply ‘Jimmy’, is a former Indian international cricketer and cricket analyst. Born on September 24, 1950 into a prominently sports-oriented family in Patiala, Punjab, his father being Lala Amarnath, the first post-independence captain of India.
Early Life & Cricket Journey
Amarnath began his career playing for Delhi in domestic cricket. Through sheer consistency and commendable technique, he made it to the national team. He was more than just a proficient batsman; his all-round abilities were visible with both bat and ball in hand. His control over seam bowling became a crucial element in several important victories for India.
- Test Career: In Test matches, he scored 4378 runs at an average of 42.50 from 69 games that included 11 hundreds. With his right-arm medium-pace swing bowling, he took 32 wickets.
- ODI Career: In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he garnered 1924 runs from 85 outings with two centuries and stole 46 wickets.
Rise to Prominence
The year 1983 was immensely successful for him when under Kapil Dev’s leadership, India strode towards its maiden World Cup victory. In this tournament, Mominder played a pivotal role by delivering sparkling performances throughout the contest which won him the Man of the Match award in semi-finals and finals, eventually becoming “Man of the series” for that tournament.

- In 1983, Amarnath was awarded the ‘Man of the Series’ title in the Cricket World Cup.
- Apart from this, he won several “Man Of The Match” titles throughout his career.
- In recognition of his contribution to Indian cricket, Mohinder Amarnath was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the CEAT Cricket Rating (CCR) International awards 2011.
Mohinder Amarnath’s resolute attitude towards tough situations made him one of India’s bravest cricketers. He continued to coach young players even after retiring from international cricket. His contributions have not only uplifted India’s stature globally but also inspired many youngsters to pursue their dreams in cricket.
Personal Life
Beyond his cricketing accolades, Jimmy is an admirable person off-field as well. Brother of fellow test cricketers Rajinder and Surinder Amarnath, Mohinder is truly a chip off the old block. He married Uma around 1975, with whom he has two children – Ashwini and Raageshwari. Presently resides in Mumbai where he enjoys spending time on outdoor activities away from public attention.
