Vijay grew up playing gully cricket in the streets of Chennai before he made it into professional cricket. His talent was spotted by Bharat Reddy, former Indian cricketer and wicketkeeper who offered him a chance to train at the academy run by India Cements Ltd.

He began his first-class career playing for Tamil Nadu in 2006, impressing spectators with his performances, which led to his selection for the Indian Premier League (IPL). He joined the prestigious team of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL’s inaugural season in 2008.
