Born on 17th December 1914, Syed Mushtaq Ali was one of the most respected icons in the history of Indian cricket. His unyielding dedication and indomitable will continue to inspire generations of cricketers.

Early life and Career

A genius from an early age, Mushtaq Ali’s talent for cricket was noticed when he was merely nine years old. Despite facing several challenges due to his humble background, nothing could dampen his spirit or determination. He made his first-class debut at just 13 while representing Holkar in the Maharaja of Patiala’s Tournament.

International Career

Mushtaq began his international career versus England in Calcultta Test in 1934. However, it was during the team’s trip to England in 1936 that he firmly established himself as a key player. Together with Vijay Merchant, they became the first Indian pair to add an opening partnership of over 200 runs in Test cricket.

  • In total, he played 11 Test matches for India between 1934 and 1952 – scoring a total of 612 runs with two centuries.
  • The right-handed batsman also took part in domestic cricket until the mid-1960s, playing well over 100 games and accumulating more than 13,000 runs.
  • He was known for his aggressive batting style, lightning quick reflexes and smooth fielding abilities which set him apart from many players of his time.

Following his retirement, Mushtaq Ali served as a selector for the Indian cricket team and also wrote columns for newspapers. He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1964 for his contributions to sports.

In 1987, he published an autobiography titled ‘Cricket Delightful’ where he detailed his experiences in cricketing world over the years. The Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack recognized him as an Indian Cricket Cricketer of the year in 1937.

Mushtaq’s great contribution to the game is remembered even today with the annual Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament named after him. He passed away at the ripe age of 90 on June 18th, 2005 but left behind an incredible legacy that resonates in the hearts of many cricket enthusiasts.
