Naren Shankar Tamhane was a renowned Indian cricket player who made significant contributions to the world of cricket during his career. He is fondly remembered for his excellent wicket-keeping abilities and his exceeding dedication towards the sport.

Early Life and Career

Born on January 9, 1931 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Naren discovered his passion for cricket at an early age. Initially starting as a slow-left arm spinner in school-level cricket matches, he quickly adapted to wicket-keeping due to the team’s need for it at that time. This marked the beginning of his prestigious journey into first-class cricket and eventually to representing India at international level.

First-Class Cricket Career

  • Tamhane made his debut into first-class-cricket playing for Bombay (now Mumbai) against Baroda in December 1951.
  • He displayed strong performance throughout various domestic tournaments and became well-known within local circles.
  • In addition to being exceptional behind the stumps, Tamhane could also wield the bat when needed. He scored nearly 2000 runs during his first class career with one century among them.
  • Zonal cricket was introduced in India after Naren had passed his prime but he still had some memorable performances including a top score of 118 not out for West Zone against South Zone in Duleep Trophy.

International Test Cricket Career

Following outstanding performance domestically, Naren Tamhane was picked up by national selectors for tour of Pakistan in 1954–55.

  • Making his international debut on October 21, 1955 against New Zealand, he played the role of India’s wicket-keeper in 21 test matches till early 1960.
  • His career was unfortunately cut short by the emergence of Budhi Kunderan. However, Naren Tamhane made a lasting impact during his tenure and was highly respected for his skills.

Tamhane as an Administrator

Post retirement, Naren Tamhane diligently served cricket off-field. He became part of cricket administration – serving as a selector at both state level (Bombay) and national level)

  • He held various roles such as Secretary of Bombay Cricket Association and Chief Selector of Indian team.
  • He also had a stint as manager when India toured England in 1990 which resulted in memorable series victory for India.
  • Throughout its tenure as an administrator, Tamhane remained committed to improving the sport that he loved dearly.

Naren Shankar Tamhane, who passed away on March 19, 2002, continues to be remembered fondly by lovers of cricket all over the world. His tremendous skill and dedication towards cricket still serve as inspiration for many budding cricketers. He is without doubt one of the towering figures of Indian cricket history.
