Nilesh Kulkarni: A Tribute to an Indian Cricket Legend
Born on April 3, 1973 in Dombivali, Maharashtra, Nilesh Moreshwar Kulkarni is a former Indian cricketer who made notable contributions as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He represented India in three Tests and ten One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1997 and 1999.
Career Beginnings
Kulkarni embarked on his cricket journey by participating at the under-19 level for Mumbai team. His talent and skill soon saw him being selected for the first-class domestic cricket tournaments where he shone like a star.
International Debut
Following splendid performances in domestic cricket, Nilesh Kulkarni made his debut in international cricket during the Test match against Sri Lanka at Colombo in August 1997. What’s interesting about this match is that he took a wicket off his very first ball becoming the only Indian player to achieve this feat in Test cricket.
- Maiden ODI: Later in September 1997, he played against Pakistan making it his maiden ODI appearance.
- Last of International Cricket: Unfortunately, Kulakarni’s international career was short-lived with his last presence seen on March 22nd of 2000 where he subsequently stepped away from professional cricket post that year.

Apart from taking a wicket off his first ball in Test cricket, Kulkarni has several other accolades to his credit. He is recognized for his 10-wicket haul in a match against Assam while playing Ranji Trophy. One of the most highlighted achievements throughout his cricket career includes being bestowed with the Madhav Mantri trophy by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
Post Retirement
After retiring from professional cricket, Kulkarni pursued an entrepreneurship pathway by establishing Sports Management Company and International Institute of Sports Management which encourages sports education and provides insights into management related aspects of sports.
