Prakash Bhandari: A Renowned Cricket Sportsman

Prakash Bhandari, born in Lahore, India (now Pakistan) on 12th November 1930, was an eminent cricket sportsman who played for Rajasthan and Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. Recognized by his powerful right-handed batting and accurate slow left-arm orthodox bowling, Bhandari contributed significantly to the Indian cricket history scoring significant runs and taking crucial wickets.

Born into a family that loved sports, Bhandari’s passion for cricket began at a very young age. He honed his skills playing backyard cricket before joining formal cricket training camps. His talent was quickly recognized leading him joining prestigious clubs like Nizam College – Hyderabad and South Zone teams which provided him with the necessary experience to eventually make it into the national team of India.

  • In Nizham College he scored an unbeaten triple century.
  • In University matches he had scores of centuries becoming famous all over country.

Prakash Bhandari’s career witnessed several memorable moments and milestones that made him one of the most influential figures in India’s cricketing arena:

  • Making his debut in Test cricket against Pakistan in Bombay (1954-55), where he opened the innings.
  • He completed his Bachelor’s degree while still representing India internationally. He then moved onto play First Class Cricket where he achieved substantial success playing for both Rajasthan and Delhi.
  • Despite facing tough competition from other talented cricketers, Bhandari achieved prominence through his exceptional performances both as a batsman and bowler. This led to him being selected for the Indian tour of Pakistan in 1954-55.
  • His finest achievement was his role in helping India secure a victory over Pakistan at Delhi while representing Team Rajasthan, by scoring an amazing century and taking multiple wickets with his bowling prowess.

Post Cricketing Career

Bhandari after retiring from professional cricket went onto become a sports commentator, sharing his valuable insights and knowledge about cricket. He also served as a selector for the Bangalore team and contributed significantly towards developing local talent.
