Born on 10th August 1963, Pramila Bhatt is known as one of the pioneering figures in Indian women’s cricket. This famous player has achieved much throughout her career, securing her place amongst the celebrated athletes of India.

Early Life

Born in Mumbai, Pramila grew up watching international cricket matches which spurted her interest in this sport from a very young age. Unlike many, she was educated primarily at home because it allowed for more flexible hours to practise and pursue her passion for cricket.

Her Successful Cricketing Journey

In 1988, she won her first accolades through intercollegiate cricket competitions representing SNDT University. Here, she shone with both bat and ball, quickly making her way up the ranks.

  • Debut: She made her debut on February 1st, 1995 by participating in an international ‘One Day International’ match against New Zealand Women’s team that took place in Christchurch.
  • Caption Years: Pramila etched her name into history when she became captain of the Indian national women’s team from November 1999 until July 2000.
  • A Match to Remember: Her most memorable stint as captain during the Netherlands Tour comes to mind when she scored a half-century (57 runs) leading to an iconic victory over England.
  • Tournaments Played: World Cup-2000, Asia Cup-2004 etc are some of the tournaments to be mentioned. She has played 8 Tests from which she scored 249 runs and took 7 wickets, with her highest score being an impressive unbeaten 68.

After serving the Indian cricket world for several years, Pramila retired in 2004 and moved towards coaching. After retirement in recognition of her service to cricket, she was nominated as a match analyst by BCCI (i.e., Board of Control for Cricket India). Throughout her tenure, she worked diligently to uplift the statuses of junior players and served as coach/consultant for many aspiring athletes.

  • Felicitated: In August 2016, the National Sports Day event arranged by Mumbai University saw honouring ‘Pramila Bhatt’ for her outstanding contribution to women’s cricket.
  • Council Member: With honor and prestige upholding Bhatt’s legacy, she is renowned amongst Maharashtra Government Graces Marks Council Members where they review marks distribution proposals on sports quota.
