Early life

Born on January 11, 1973 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh (India), Rahul Sharad Dravid moved with his family to Bangalore when he was very young. From school cricket to representing Karnataka at the domestic level, his early career gave hints of what was to come next – a historic international career that would establish him among cricket’s all-time greats.

The International Journey

Dravid made his debut in Test matches against England at Lord’s in June 1996 – scoring a commendable 95 runs. But it wasn’t until Indian toured South Africa later that year did he score his maiden century that marked his arrival on the grand stage. Throughout his test career from 1996 till 2012, he accumulated over)13,288 runs-a testament to his consistency and exceptional skillset.

  • In ODIs, he made more than 10,000 runs, making him only the twelfth player- and second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar-to do so.
  • He played an instrumental role in taking India to the finals of the Year 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy and Year 2002 NatWest Series.
  • His highest score in Tests stands at 270, scored against Pakistan in 2004, showing his ability to score big and patience.
  • Dravid was the only Indian cricketer who has hit a century in all ten Test cricket playing nations.

The Captains era

Rahul Dravid took over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team from Sourav Ganguly in 2005. During his tenure as captain, India achieved numerous victories including series win in England and West Indies.

Post Playing Career

After retiring from international cricket in 2012, Rahul Dravid didn’t steer away but kept contributing to Indian cricket. He took up different roles like working with Rajasthan Royals in IPL, mentoring Delhi Daredevils and coaching Under-19 and India A teams.Under his guidance, India’s Under-19 team won the World Cup in 2018..

  • In 2000, he was awarded Wisden Cricketer of the Year.
  • Rahul Dravid also received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Player of The Year in 2004.
  • He was appointed as member of Laureus Sports Academy (An elite group composed by top sportspersons around the globe) in 2014.
  • In April 2021, Rahul Dravid was Inducted into ICC ‘Hall Of Fame’ making him fifth Indian to receive this honour followed by Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Anil Kumble.
