In his early days, Desai showed great potential with his robust build and knack for bowling. His passion and dedication towards the sport led him to the big stage when he debuted in Test cricket for India against Pakistan in October 1959 at Brabourne Stadium. His career spanned almost nine years where he represented India in 28 Test matches before retiring in March 1968 after a match against West Indies.

  • The young athlete bagged day one debut wicket of famous Pakistani batsman Hanif Mohammad during first test match of bilateral series between India and Pakistan.
  • In the year 1961-62 while playing against England, nicknamed “Tiny” due to his height (5 ft 4 in), Desai stunned everyone by emerging as India’s fastest bowlers.
  • In the same series, he became famous for another reason – becoming the first tailender to score a half-century for India.
  • In total, Desai took 74 wickets at an average of nearly 33 runs per dismissal throughout his test career.
  • His top-notch performance came against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth during South African tour at 1961/62 when he delivered terrifying overs that got accredited by critiques globally.

After retiring from International cricket, Desai continued his association with the sport in various roles. He served as a selector for Mumbai’s Ranji team and was appointed the president of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in 1996.

Desai passed away on April 27, 1998, leaving behind an indelible mark on Indian cricket. His contributions to the sport are remembered fondly- not just for his bowling skills, but also for his gentlemanly conduct both on and off-field.
