Ramnath Parkar
Ramnath Hitu Parkar (1 August 1946 – 11 May 1999) was a prominent Indian cricketer who shone brightly in the history of cricket, especially in Mumbai cricket. He played for India as a right-handed opening batsman and right-arm off break bowler during his active career from 1963 to 1980.
Originally born in Bombay (now Mumbai), he made significant strides by playing mainly in the domestic circuit before representing the national team on three occasions.
Early Life and Career
Ramnath’s love for cricket started at an early age. Mostly self-taught, he diligently honed his batting skills which eventually paved the way for him to make his first-class debut at only seventeen years old while representing Bombay. Thereafter, he became a regular feature for Bombay (later known as Mumbai) playing predominantly able down-the-order as well as opening the innings.
First-Class Cricket
- Parkar’s exceptional talent as an accomplished opening batsman saw him consistently deliver strong top-order performances with many noteworthy knocks standing testament to his prowess.
- Between 1964 and 1977, he represented Bombay in 82 First-Class matches, accumulating a total of 4252 runs at an impressive average of nearly 40. His amicable temperament and textbook style often came into play in these games letting him quickly establish himself amongst premier players of Bombay team.
- In addition to this, his right-arm off-break bowling spelled trouble for opponents too as he took a good number of wickets throughout his career affirming his status as one dependable all-rounder.
The Indian National Team
Parkar evidently had a shorter stint with the national team due to competition from other players. However, in the brief period he was represented, his contribution can not be overlooked.
His Test debut came against England in Delhi to replace Sunil Gavaskar who was out injured. Even though India lost the match, Parkar’s performance was notable for his determined effort and batting style.
He went on to represent India twice more against West Indies. Despite this seemingly brief recording at international level, his impact on Mumbai cricket remains significant.
Ramnath Parkar’s Legacy
Despite retiring rather prematurely from top-level cricket following series of injuries, Ramnath continued to contribute to cricket as an instructor guiding younger players in many Bombay based cricket academies till his untimely demise in May 1999.
Today, Ramnath Hitu Parkar is remembered fondly within the annals of Indian Cricket both for his indomitable spirit and steady hand during play. He may have been around when there were others with towering reputations but Parkar sure did leave an indelible mark all by himself.
