Born into a Brahmin family of educationalists, Shastri was set out for academic successes. However, his indomitable passion for cricket took him on an alternative journey. Studying at Don Bosco School in Matunga and later graduating from Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce & Economics (RA Podar) in Mumbai, he learned life lessons that were pivotal in shaping his character engaging meaningfully with the sport.

  • Test Debut: His test debut came against New Zealand at Basin Reserve on February 21, 1981.
  • ODI Debut: His first One Day International was played against England at Nehru stadium on November 29, 1981.

Honors and Recognitions

  • In the year of 1985, during his career peak, he won the illustrious “Champion of Champions” title following his exceptional performance in the World Championship of Cricket held in Australia.
  • In the course of his international cricketing days spanning over nearly twelve years (from late-1981 up till early-1992), this outstanding cricketer scored a total count of over 3800 runs in test cricket and over 3100 ODI runs.
  • His unique bowling style, left-arm spin, clinched a record breaking six wickets by merely giving away 12 runs against Australia in a one-day match held at Brabourne Stadium (Mumbai). This achievement was recorded as the second-best ODI performance by an Indian bowler.

Ravi Shastri’s passion for cricket did not restrict him to just being on field. His diverse interfacing with the sport also took shape when he started off his coaching journey with the national team. He first became the team director of Indian Cricket in 2014 following India’s poor show in England.

In the year 2017, he was designated as the coach till ICC World Cup 2019 after which he got an extension till T20 World Cup 2021 due to his impressive stint as head coach.

  • Under his leadership as head coach, Team India made notable achievements such as beating Australia on their own soil both in 2018-19 & in 2020-21.
  • The incredible win during Gabba Test Match in January 2021 resulted into India proudly retaining its Border-Gavaskar Trophy consecutively for three times under Shastri’s tenure which added another feather to Ravi Shatri’s illustrious career cap.
