From an early age, Ravi was passionate about sports. In his school years at Don Bosco High School in Matunga, he showed leadership skills and physical prowess during sporting events. His potential for cricket was recognised by local selectors and soon he found himself playing for Bombay’s competitive cricket league.

  • In 1985, Ravi sizzled the world stage with his remarkable performances leading India to victory in the World Championship of Cricket held in Australia. His enchanting gameplay earned him the title ‘Champion of Champions’, enhancing his status as one of India’s top cricketers.
  • Shastri holds several records including scoring the fastest double century (in terms of balls faced) in First Class cricket and six sixes in an over against Baroda while playing for Bombay in Ranji Trophy.
  • As an all-rounder player, he exhibited brilliance both as a left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler. In total, between 1981 to 1992 Shastri represented India and competed in 80 Tests and more than 150 One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

In the mid-nineties, following his established playing career, Ravi Shastri transitioned into a successful cricket commentator, earning a reputation for his thoughtful analysis and engaging commentary style.

  • In 2007, he was appointed as the interim coach of the Indian cricket team during their tour to Bangladesh. Later, in June 2015 he became the director of the Indian Cricket team where he made several significant contributions towards improving the team’s performance globally.
  • Under Shastri’s guidance as head coach from 2017 onwards, India climbed to numerous successes including winning their first-ever Test series in Australia after attempting for over seven decades.
