Born on April 30, 1987, Rohit Gurunath Sharma has since left an indelible mark in the world of cricket. A hard-hitting right-handed batsman with a knack for pressure situations and a crafty off-spinner when required, Rohit’s versatility is matched only by his consistency at the highest levels of international cricket.
Career Start
Inspired by his uncle’s affinity towards cricket, Rohit started playing the sport at a very young age. His prowess did not go unnoticed, and he got a break to showcase his talent in Mumbai’s renowned Harris Shield school tournament. Impressing with his performance, Rohit was selected for the Mumbai Under-17 team.
- In 2005/06 making his List-A debut, he scored a century just four matches into the season.
- A year later, he made headlines when he displayed an amazing counterattacking display against Gujarat in India’s domestic Ranji Trophy competition given his tender age of just 19 years old.
International Career

- While still trying to find his feet in international cricket during 2011 World Cup, due to consistent injuries to certain players his first breakthrough came during West Indies tour where he showed immense maturity at crucial stages of the game scoring vital runs throughout the series.
- 2013 was a monumental year for Rohit when he scored his first double century in an ODI against Australia going on to amass 209 runs from just 158 balls, which also included a record breaking sixteen sixes. He became only third player to score a double hundred in ODIs and first Indian to achieve this feat twice after surpassing it with yet another extraordinary innings of 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014.
T20I and Test Career
Rohit made an astounding debut as an opener batting in T20 International cricket format setting a tone of class, consistency and complete dominance over opposition bowlers. This saw him becoming the most successful international T20 batsman affording him accolades such as ‘ICC Cricketer of the Year’ and ‘Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year’ in 2020.
- In 2007, featuring in inaugural World Twenty20 held at South Africa , Rohit played crucial part scoring unbeaten fifty that helped India reach final eventually winning beating Pakistan.
