Born on November 11, 1924, in Bombay now Mumbai, Rusi Modi’s interest in cricket sparked at a young age. He honed his skills at St Xavier’s College and then moved onto Wilson College where he represented their respective cricket teams whilst also developing an outstanding reputation as a promising cricketer.

Career Highlights

  • Modi made an exceptional debut during the second unofficial Test at Calcutta against Commonwealth XI scoring a hundred (149). His confident approach coupled with discipline laid down the foundation of many more hundreds to come.
  • In the year 1945-46, he scored another century against Holkar thus strengthening his position in Bombay cricket. This season was duly followed by smashing performances leading him to be selected in the team playing against England which marked clinical milestones further defining his career trajectory.
  • The Ranji Trophy match of 1948-49, is often regarded as Modi’s magnum opus moment where he smashed 245 against Baroda and reached new heights of success.
  • He produced coloured innings throughout his First-Class career, aggregating up to 7505 runs at an average of 53.57 – a feat bowled over both critics and fans alike.
  • Despite several injuries, Modi’s resilience led him to play for India in the 13 Test matches where he averaged over 31 runs per innings.

Retirement and Post-Cricket Life

Rusi retired from first-class cricket after the Ranji Trophy semi-final in January 1961. However, his passion towards sports didn’t fade away as he served on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) giving back to the sport that shaped his life. He continued influencing young aspirants via sporting commentaries, writings and speeches until his death at age of 71 in May 1996.
