Early Life and Debut

Surti grew up developing his skills for cricket eventually making it into the state team. His first-class debut occurred when he began playing for Gujarat at the young age of 20 in the late 1950s. For over fifteen years, Surti played first-class cricket amassing phenomenal numbers that were simply awe-inspiring.

International Cricket Career

Rusi Surti‘s international career kicked off on December 13,1960, where he participated as a part of Indian squad against Pakistan in Mumbai (Bombay). Over his career period from 1960 to 1969,Surti earned his reputation as an exceptional all-rounder representing India in twenty-six test matches contributing significantly both with bat and ball.

  • In total, he scored 1263 test runs including nine fifties at an average rate of 28.70.
  • As a left-arm spin bowler, Surti took 42 wickets with best innings figures standing at three balls taken thirty six times. He had an economy rate below three which showcased his remarkable control over his bowling pace.
  • Besides batting and bowling, Surti was also acclaimed for fielding abilities. In fact, many regarded him as one of India’s finest fielders during his active cricketing years.

Retirement and Post-retirement Life

Surti played his last Test match against New Zealand in Wellington on March 12,1970 after which he migrated to Australia and played for Queensland. He passed away on January 13,2013 in Mumbai due frequent illness that led to multiple organ failure.
