Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, popularly known as the “God of Cricket”, is a former Indian cricketer widely recognized as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. Born on 24th April 1973, this illustrious sportsman’s career spanned over twenty-four years starting from1989 to 2013.

Career Highlights

  • Debut: Sachin made his Test debut against Pakistan at Karachi on November 15, 1989, and played his first One Day International (ODI) match against the same team in Gujranwala, Pakistan, just a month later.
  • Achievements: Sachin holds numerous cricketing records. He is the only player to have scored one hundred international centuries, the first player to score a double century in an ODI, and the only player to reach more than thirty thousand runs in international cricket.
  • Retirement: His final match was held at his home ground – Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 16th November of 2013. During his farewell speech that touched millions around the world, he addressed India as his mother and reminded youngsters that dreams do come true.

Tendulkar has been awarded many prestigious awards throughout his impactful career which includes four major civilian awards given by the government of India namely,

  • Arjuna Award for his outstanding achievement in Sports-1994
  • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for his exceptional performance in sport-1997-98 season
  • Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in 1999
  • The Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, following his brilliant performance in the 2008 season.

Besides this, he was honoured with the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for cricketer of the year at the ICC awards. In February 2010, Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack ranked him the second-greatest Test batsman of all time behind Don Bradman, and the second greatest ODI batsman of all time behind Viv Richards.

Sachin Tendulkar after retiring from cricket has involved himself in various philanthropic activities which include working towards improving conditions for underprivileged children and contributing toward health-related causes. He is also a Member of Parliament, having been nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012.
