In the early stages of his career, Shivlal played domestic cricket representing Hyderabad in Ranji Trophy games. He rose steadily through the ranks due to his consistent performance and brilliant skills as an off-spinner.

  • Test Debut: In 1979, Shivlal made his international debut against Australia in the memorable dual series where Sunil Gavaskar was leading the squad. However, destiny had different plans and after only two matches he was dropped out of the team until picked again after three years.
  • Career Highs: After making good use of second chance, Shivlal emerged as one of the top spinners for Team India with some remarkable performances under his belt. One such memorable inning was in Pakistan when he took seven wickets giving away just 81 runs during the first innings and four more wickets letting go just 91 runs in second innings.
  • Last Test Match: In March 1987, he put up his gloves for good after a test match with Pakistan which ended without result (draw).
