Born Vasant Shankar Ranjane, the Indian cricket player popularly known as Vasant Ranjane, has been regarded as one of the sport’s most skilled and respected right-arm fast-medium bowlers. Renowned for his concentrated focus on detail and precision, Vasant Ranjane had a career that spanned over almost a decade from 1958 to 1964.

Ranjane was born on March 27, 1936, in Nasik, Maharashtra. His passion for cricket began at an early age and he showed significant promise with both the ball and bat. In local matches around his hometown, young Ranjane fell in love with the sport which eventually turned into him dedicating his life to it.

Career Highlights

  • First Class Debut: In November 1956 against Gujarat at Pune, where he took 5 wickets.
  • Test Debut: At Brabourne Stadium against West Indies in December 1958. This match marked India’s only Test series win against the West Indies until the mid-’70s.
  • Consecutive Wins:In December ’59, won two back-to-back games against Australia contributing significantly by taking five wickets in each innings.
  • Last Test Appearance:Ranjane’s last international appearance was against England at Chennai in January 1962 where he scored an impressive half-century thus demonstrating his batting prowess as well.

In 2007, the Maharashtra government posthumously awarded Ranjane Rajiv Gandhi Lifetime Achievement Award. It recognised his bestowal to cricket and enshrined him as an all-time cricket legend. Unfortunately, Vasant Ranjane could not personally receive the award as he passed away in December 2011.

Vasant Ranjane’s legacy is monumental. He played a total of 7 test matches scoring 98 runs with a batting average of 16.33 and took 17 wickets leaking just over 700 runs. But statistics don’t really portray the impact this man had on Indian cricket. His ability to compete against top-ranked teams was admirable at a time when India wasn’t considered much of a competing force in international cricket. Today,veteran cricket players and young enthusiasts continue to find inspiration in his career—and it isn’t hard to see why.
