Venkataraman Subramanya: An Outstanding Cricketer
Born on September 26, 1941, Venkataraman Subramanya is widely regarded as one of India’s best cricketers. This right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium pace bowler made significant contributions to Indian cricket during his active years ranging from the late 1950s till early 1970s.
Early Life and Career
Born in Bangalore, Karnataka, Subramanya had great love for cricket since childhood. His grandfather B.Venkataratnam was both Secretary and President of Karnakata State Cricket Association (KSCA). Under this environment full of cricket enthusiasm, he developed a keen interest for cricket at an early age. He attended Bishop Cotton Boys’ School where his passion for cricket flourished under the guidance of inspiring coaches.
Introduction to International Cricket
Subramanya commenced his international career with First Class debut for Mysore against Madras in November 1958-59 then Ranji Trophy match. However, it took him some time to establish himself firmly in the national team. He made his test debut against England at Headingley on June 8,1967.
Career Milestones and Achievements
- In total, Subramanya played nine Test matches between 1965 and 1968.
- During his international career, he recorded a batting average of 25.22 though unfortunately never scored a century.
- He picked up three wickets throughout his Test career with bowling average of 58.33
- One of Subramanya’s most memorable performances came in the 1967-68 series against Australia when he made brilliant score of 75 runs, highest of his career.
- A notable and an inspiring figure, Subramanya served as the captain for Karnataka State Cricket team
Post-Cricket Career
After retiring from cricket, Subramanya started a new innings outside the field. He became a selector, manager to the Indian team touring England in 1990, and was elected Vice President of BCCI in 2005. His stewardship contributed considerably towards Karnataka cricket development and is still considered one of the key figures responsible for making Karnataka a formidable force in domestic circuit.
To date, Venkataraman Subramanya remains highly respected not only for his skills on the pitch but also for his contributions off it. A true all-rounder with prodigious skill set – both technical and tactical him one of India’s cricket legends.
