Vijay Hazare: A Legendary Figure in Indian Cricket

Born on 11th March 1915, Vijay Samuel Hazare was an accomplished cricketer who carved a strong presence for India in the international sports fraternity. Throughout his career, he held various significant titles such as being a cricket player, captain and even selector for the Indian Cricket Team. Additionally, Hazare excelled not only as a prolific right-hand batsman but also as a fast-medium bowler.

The Early Years

Vijay Hazare’s journey into cricket began at the tender age of 17 when he started playing first-class cricket for Maharashtra. However, actual recognition came his way when combined with his brother, Vivek Hazare; they created several records in domestic cricket league – Ranji Trophy.

  • In the 1943-44 season? The brothers set a new record by scoring a remarkable 577-run partnership.
  • Hazare himself scored triple century (309) thus becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat.

After making substantial contributions to domestic cricket, Vijay Hazare finally made his test debut in England during India’s tour in 1946. Although he didn’t create much hype initially yet soon rose to prominence mainly due to his indomitable spirit comfortability against any bowling attack. But it was an amiable blend of patience and technique that laid the foundation of impactful innings.

  • In Adelaide Test match against Australia in 1948, he scored twin centuries under grim circumstances warranting him public attention and critical acclaim worldwide.
  • With his 309 out of a team total of 387 against Holkar in the final of the Ranji Trophy in 1946-47, he demonstrated his ability to stay at the crease and collect runs. This game is best remembered for Hazare’s epic battle with C.K Nayudu who was then India’s premier spin bowler.

Captaincy Years & Achievements

The year 1951 marked a significant benchmark as Vijay Hazare achieved captaincy of Indian Cricket Team. Under his leadership, implemented much-required discipline and professionalism instilled a sense of unity amongst his teammates.

  • Hazare captained India in 14 Test matches between 1951 and 1954, including India’s first-ever Test win in the fifth Test against England on homeground at Madras (now Chennai) during the English tour of 1951-52.
  • Famously known as ‘Victory Vinoo,’ this cricketer will always be remembered for leading India to its first-ever test match victory in 1952.

Post Retirement Contributions

Even after retiring from cricket post-Indian Tour Of Pakistan In 1952–53, Hazare continued contributing to cricket by serving as an inspector with Public Works Department (PWD), Government of Baroda and selector for BCCI. He also mentored young talent sprouting across different parts of the country and remained involved with “first-class” cricket till late seventies.

In conclusion, it can be said that Vijay Samuel Hazare was indeed one of the first superstars Indian cricket ever saw. His journey throughout was adorned with breathtaking performance alongside sheer persistence which shall inspire generations coming.
