Born on November 1, 1974, Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman, popularly known as VVS Laxman, is a former Indian cricketer and one of the legends in international cricket. In his stellar career spanning over 16 years, he has achieved numerous milestones that have etched his name into cricketing history. From earning the sobriquet ‘Very Very Special’ to creating unforgettable moments on the cricket field with his sublime stroke-play and match-saving knocks, Laxman’s contribution to Indian cricket has been immense.
Career Highlights
- Laxman made his Test debut against South Africa in Ahmedabad in 1996 and went on to play 134 Tests for India where he amassed a whopping 8,781 runs at an average of 45.97.
- In One Day Internationals (ODI), he represented India in 86 matches scoring more than 2300 runs.
- The right-handed batsman scored 17 centuries and played some epic innings during his cricketing journey. His iconic performance remains “The Eden Gardens Test” of 2001 against Australia where he scored a majestic 281, which led India to one of their greatest wins ever.
- This knock of 281 was rated by Wisden as the greatest innings of all time in its list of Top 100 Test innings in 2001.

- In recognition of his contribution to international cricket, he was awarded the Padma Shri award, India’s fourth highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2011.
- In 2002, VVS Laxman received the Arjuna Award for Cricket.
- Laxman also served as a mentor to IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad post retirement. His insights on and off the field have been immensely beneficial for emerging players in the team.
Retirement:
VVS Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2012. Despite an abrupt end to his esteemed career, Laxman has made significant contributions both during his playing days and afterwards through various roles including coaching, sports administration and commentary.
