About Woorkeri Raman
Born on May 23, 1965 in Madras (now Chennai), Woorkeri Venkat Raman, popularly known as WV Raman, is a notable former Indian cricketer and accomplished cricket coach. He was the first southpaw to score a century for India in Test Match Cricket.
Career Highlights
- 1988: Raman made his debut for India against West Indies during the Reliance World Cup.
- 1990: Raman scored his maiden international hundred against South Africa at Johannesburg.
- 1996-97: Raman ended his career playing First-Class cricket matches with an aggregate of more than 8000 runs which included twenty centuries as well.
The Coaching Era
In December 2018, Raman transitioned into coaching and was appointed as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, becoming the first-ever full-time female team coach. Under his guidance, the Indian women’s cricket reached new heights including their victorious entry into the finals of T20 Women’s World Cup in Australia in early 2020. After a successful tenure, he stepped down from this role in April 2021 due to health issues.
Award & Recognition
In recognition of his contribution to cricket both as a player and as a coach, Raman was awarded the prestigious CEAT Cricket Rating (CCR) International Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. As a noteworthy author, he also penned ‘The Winning Sixer’ where he shared valuable leadership lessons drawn from his extensive experience with sports.
Personal Life
WV Raman is known to maintain a low-profile private life. Despite being one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket, he keeps his personal life away from media attention. He continues to live in his hometown Chennai post retirement.
